Enjoy waterside fun at the Mayor’s Thames Festival in London   by dipika

London hosts hundreds of great events every year – but if you can only pick one to enjoy in 2010, the Mayor’s Thames Festival might be the best one to go for.

Taking place this year on September 11th and 12th, the festival brings the city’s main waterway to life with a host of things to see and do for all the family.

The festival commissions new works on an annual basis so that attendees can take in a wide range of exhibitions, street arts, illuminations, installations, pyrotechnics, circus events, carnivals, music, dance and food while staying in London hotels.

One particular element of the Mayor’s Thames Festival that is always popular with locals and tourists alike is the illuminated Night Procession, which rounds off the proceedings by making its way along the north and south banks of the Thames before a spectacular fireworks display is engineered from the centre of the river.

This year’s festival offers much for adults and kids alike to enjoy while staying in discount hotels in London, with activities and performances taking place on riverside walkways, docks, bridges and open spaces between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge – and even further afield.

Highlights include the Festival Market for food and crafts, a feast on Southwark Bridge, a river parade of working boats travelling from Tower Bridge to Westminster Bridge, photography masterclasses and a display of art inspired by some of the world’s greatest river cities.

The festivities will begin at noon on each day and finish up at 22:00 BST, giving you plenty of time to either have a night on the town or head back to your London hotel for a good night’s sleep.

You might want to spend an extra day or two in the capital so you can take in the city’s other attractions, including the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the great shopping that can be had on Oxford Street.
